And then there was me...

Some art that I made recently:

This is a collage that I made for drawing class. We were asked to photocopy images and make a collage that included text. I photocopied photographs by Ilse Bing from a book in the library.
This image is a close-up. You can sort of see that on top of the girl's head is an upside-down swing set and the two girls that were in the swing set are cut out and are falling. The text is falling too and it reads, "Remember that you will forget."

Drawing is what got me interested in studying art. I like to draw from life or from an image. I like to look at every surface of an object or a scene and put it on paper. In recording all the details of something, you get really focussed and almost entranced. I like to enter this focus sometimes. This is an image that I drew while looking out my bedroom window into my backyard. It's a shared backyard with other people in my apartment. The guys that live on the first floor do public movie screenings in the backyard in the summer. So, every morning when I look out the window, I see a huge stack of chairs. I realize that this image is a bit blurry but hopefully you can see the chairs. The drawing isn't complete. I might finish it, but I usually don't finish things that I do for myself, so I might not finish it.

This is a work in progress for my Fibres class. I made four small weavings, one for my roommate, one for my sister, one for her roommate(who is also my good friend) and one for me. Here they are before I cut them apart from each other. This project is going to be about smell. I was thinking about how cloth always takes on a persons smell so, I am giving each weaving to the person to wear and live with for a few days. Each one is woven with the colours that I felt represented that person. When I showed it to my sister and my roommate, they both liked the one that I had made for them the best. That makes me think that my colour choices were successful. I actually like the one that I made for myself the best.

John Cage

I did a big essay about John Cage and Postmodernism and despite disliking essay-writing, I really liked learning about John Cage.

Just hearing him speaking is enough to change the way you think about sound and music, you almost don't have to hear his music. In class we watched a documentary about him and he said something that blew my mind that I keep thinking of and referring to it. He said, "The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think it's not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason." This quote can be applied to anything, I even find myself applying it to situations  or people that I judge badly. Then I think, "Why can't this be beautiful too, because this is the way that things are and that people are."

Art: 21

I started watching some Art: 21 videos lately. They show different artist's processes and practices which makes it very interesting for aspiring artists. You really get to understand the artist's work and you get new ideas about ways of working.

First, I watched a new one, available online, about William Kentridge. It made me think a lot about using different media in art. He combines animation, film, opera, drawing and theatre all into one practice. I found it inspiring to see the way he reconciled his multi-media approach. I feel like my art is all over the place, too. I'm always exploring different media. It was nice to see someone use many different media in a successful way.

Since I was so inspired by this video, I decided to watch another. This one was about "Place." It included Richard Serra, Sally Mann, Margaret Kilgallen, Barry McGee and Pepon Osorio. Now that I've watched this video, I finally understand Richard Serra's art. I have never seen it in person, so I never really new what it was about. These videos really help you to see the art in a way that almost feels like I've seen it or even met the artist. I was also really inspired by Sally Mann. The way she incorporates her life and her art seemed really honest.

These Days

Here's a little music that's been inspiring me these days.

These Days by Jackson Browne was covered by Nico and then covered by St Vincent.

The next two songs are from The Darjeeling Limited. I like the way they make you feel like you are somewhere else.

And, lastly, I've been listening to this song. It's a version of Wild Heart by Fleetwood Mac sung backstage by Stevie Nicks. You can't find it recorded anywhere else.
